How Does SMILE Work?

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is an advanced laser technique that reshapes the cornea to correct refractive errors like nearsightedness and astigmatism.

Unlike LASIK, which involves creating a corneal flap, SMILE uses a small incision to remove tissue without the need for a flap, resulting in less disruption to the eye. The results are permanent since the corneal tissue doesn't grow back.

Many patients enjoy a quick recovery, often noticing significant improvements in their vision immediately after the procedure.

How to Prepare for SMILE

Here are some important steps to follow before your surgery:

Follow our Contact Lens Policy

There's no need to remove contact lenses before your consultation. However, please remove them before your surgery:

  • Soft Contacts: Remove 3 days before
  • Extended Wear/Toric Contacts: Remove 2 weeks before
  • Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Contacts: Remove 3 weeks before

Be Ready with Your Questions for Your Surgeon

Take some time to jot down any questions you may have about the procedure, recovery, or expected results. This will help you feel more informed and comfortable on the day of surgery.

Arrange for a Driver

Please ensure you have someone to drive you home after your SMILE surgery, as you won’t be able to drive immediately after.

Day of SMILE Surgery

1

Preparing for the Procedure

On the day of your SMILE surgery, our caring clinical team will be with you every step of the way to ensure you feel comfortable and confident. We’ll begin by applying anesthetic eye drops to numb your eyes. If needed, we can also offer a mild sedative to help you relax.

2

The SMILE Procedure

The SMILE procedure is designed to be quick and efficient, typically taking less than 15 minutes in total. The laser operates for just a few seconds on each eye, reshaping the cornea through a small incision with incredible precision.

3

Post-Procedure Recovery

After your procedure, you’ll head home to take a nap. You can go to the beach, pool, work out and wear eye makeup the very next day! Dr. Goel’s expertise ensures a smooth recovery using advanced SMILE technology.

SMILE Recovery

One of the key benefits of SMILE surgery is its quick recovery, allowing most patients to return to normal activities within 24 hours. You'll need someone to drive you home after the procedure, but you'll likely be able to get back to work or school without delay.

While mild irritation or discomfort is common, these symptoms usually resolve quickly and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief. SMILE typically has fewer side effects than LASIK, with fewer issues like dry eyes.

Dr. Goel and his team will ensure personalized care throughout your recovery, with follow-up appointments scheduled to monitor your progress and address any concerns.
