How Does LASIK Work?

If you’re considering LASIK eye surgery in Baltimore, Columbia, or elsewhere in Maryland, you may be wondering: how does LASIK work? LASIK reshapes the cornea to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The recovery is usually quick, with many patients noticing clearer vision immediately.
At Goel Vision, we ensure a seamless, personalized experience tailored to your needs. Your comfort and safety are our top priorities.
What to Expect During Your Consultation
The first step toward LASIK is a free, no-obligation consultation. During this appointment, we’ll:
- Perform A Diagnostic Testing
Evaluate your vision with a comprehensive eye exam. - Conduct A Corneal Mapping
Measure the shape and thickness of your cornea to determine your candidacy. - Review Your Medical History
Ensure there are no underlying conditions that could affect the procedure. - Discuss Your Vision Goals
Understand your lifestyle and preferences to recommend the best approach. - Review Your Pricing and Financing Options
Provide transparent information on LASIK costs and flexible payment options.
At Goel Vision, we offer free in-person and virtual consultations - choose the best one for your lifestyle. We're here to accomodate you.

How to Prepare for LASIK
Here are some important steps to follow before your surgery:
Follow our Contact Lens Policy
You don’t need to remove contact lenses for your consultation, but they must be removed before surgery:
- Soft Contacts: Remove 3 days before
- Extended Wear/Toric Contacts: Remove 2 weeks before
- Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Contacts: Remove 3 weeks before
Be Ready with Your Questions for Your Surgeon
Take some time to jot down any questions you may have about the procedure, recovery, or expected results. This will help you feel more informed and comfortable on the day of surgery.
Arrange for a Driver
Please ensure you have someone to drive you home after your LASIK surgery, as you won’t be able to drive immediately after.

Day of LASIK Surgery
1
Preparing for the Procedure
On surgery day, our team ensures your comfort by guiding you through each step. We’ll numb your eyes with anesthetic drops and may provide a mild sedative for relaxation.
2
The LASIK Procedure
LASIK is quick and efficient. It usually takes under 15 minutes in total, with the laser working less than a minute per eye. Its speed makes it ideal for busy lifestyles.
3
Post-Procedure Recovery
After LASIK, we recommend you head home to take a nap. Most patients resume daily activities within 24 hours, including the beach, gym, and wearing makeup.

LASIK Recovery
LASIK recovery is typically quick, with most patients returning to their normal routine within a day. Arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home, as rest is recommended after surgery. Mild irritation or dry eyes are common but usually resolve quickly with over-the-counter relief.
Dr. Goel and his team provide detailed post-surgical instructions and schedule follow-up appointments to support your smooth recovery.
