Cataract Surgery

If you or a loved one are experiencing cloudy vision, it may be time for a cataract evaluation. Cataracts are a common part of aging and often go unnoticed since they don’t usually cause pain. It's important to monitor their progression and seek treatment when needed. Early evaluation can increase the chances of successful surgery and help prevent further vision loss.

At Goel Vision, we offer tailored cataract surgery options designed to restore your vision and improve your quality of life, helping you achieve freedom from glasses and contacts.

Approximately 4 million cataract surgeries are performed each year in the United States, with one in three Americans expected to need the procedure in their lifetime.

How Cataracts Form

Your natural lens focuses light onto the retina, which transmits signals to the brain. Cataracts form when proteins in the lens clump together, creating cloudy areas that block light—this is a common part of aging, particularly for those over 50.

Initially, cataracts may not show symptoms, but as they develop, they can obstruct vision.

Symptoms of Cataracts

Symptoms vary based on the severity of the cataract, and may include:

  • Blurred or hazy vision
  • Double vision in one eye
  • Faded or yellowed colors
  • Frequent changes in eyeglass prescription
  • Difficulty seeing in dim light
  • Increased sensitivity to glare, especially when driving at night

Types of Cataract Surgeries

Both traditional and laser-assisted cataract surgeries can effectively remove the clouded natural lens of the eye. After removal, an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is implanted.

Performed with a hand-held scalpel, this method involves making a small incision in the cornea, followed by breaking up the clouded lens with ultrasound and suctioning it out. While effective, this technique has a wider margin for error compared to laser-assisted surgery.

This advanced method uses ultrasound imaging to create precise incisions. The laser weakens the cataract before it is broken into smaller pieces, allowing for easier removal. This method requires less energy and preserves corneal cells better than traditional surgery, reducing the risk of complications.

During your initial consultation with Goel Vision, we’ll identify the type of cataract you have to determine the best surgical approach. Types of cataracts include:

  • Nuclear Sclerotic: The most common, linked to aging; may briefly improve vision before declining.
  • Cortical: Causes clouding at the lens edge, often seen in diabetics, with a spoke-like appearance.
  • Posterior Subcapsular: Forms at the back of the lens and can progress quickly, common in diabetics, steroid users, and the very nearsighted.
