PRK Eye Surgery

What Is PRK Eye Surgery?
PRK, short for Photorefractive Keratectomy, is a pioneering laser vision correction procedure designed for patients with thin corneas. Unlike LASIK, which creates a flap, PRK reshapes the cornea by gently removing its outer layer of cells. This method enhances the cornea's ability to focus light accurately on the retina.
During the procedure, the surgeon uses a gentle buffing brush to remove the outer layer, reshaping the tissue to focus light accurately on the retina. A soft contact lens is then placed over the eye as a bandage to aid healing. This process allows the cornea to heal naturally, often leading to clearer vision in just a few days.
Benefits of PRK
Long-Lasting Results
PRK is permanent as the reshaped corneal tissue will not grow back.
Minimally Invasive
The procedure doesn't require a corneal flap, resulting in less disruption to the cornea.

What to Expect
PRK Results
Patients who undergo PRK can expect significant improvements in their vision. Many achieve 20/20 vision or better, allowing them to reduce or eliminate their dependency on glasses and contact lenses. Although PRK may take slightly longer for vision stabilization compared to LASIK and SMILE, the outcomes are highly satisfactory for most patients.
The Difference Between PRK, LASIK & SMILE
While PRK, LASIK and SMILE are three highly effective vision correction procedures, they differ in how the cornea is treated and the recovery process:
PRK
Ideal for patients with thin corneas or active lifestyles, PRK reshapes the cornea without creating a flap, resulting in a slightly longer recovery time.
LASIK
Uses a flap-based technique, allowing for quicker healing and vision improvements almost immediately.
SMILE
Minimally invasive procedure that uses a small incision to remove tissue from the cornea without the need to create a flap, providing a quick recovery and reducing risks of complications.
