Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) was the industry’s first laser vision correction procedure. Today, it is recommended for patients with especially thin corneas. Most problems with nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism occur because your eye cannot properly refract light and focus it on the retina, which helps transmit images to the brain. With PRK, instead of a creating a corneal flap as with LASIK, Dr. Goel removes the outer layer of corneal cells using a gentle buffing brush to help reshape the exposed layers, allowing it to properly focus light. Dr. Goel then places a soft contact lens on your eye that acts as a bandage during the healing process. Because the cornea is so resilient, it typically heals in about five days.

BENEFITS
If you have ever been told that you are not a good candidate for LASIK, this does not mean that laser eye surgery is out of the question. Dr. Sonny Goel offers safe, effective PRK treatment at his refractive practice, giving you the chance to reduce or eliminate your need for contact lenses and glasses. PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy, is the predecessor to LASIK, and shares many similarities.
RESULTS:
PRK involves removing the outer corneal layer entirely. This procedure is often recommended to those who have very thin corneas, or those who have occupations that carry a risk of eye injury. The results of PRK surgery are very similar, helping many patients to achieve 20/20 vision or better. Though PRK is not as common as LASIK, the procedure is still very safe and effective. This is especially true when you receive treatment from Dr. Goel who, with years of experience and a true dedication to his patients’ wellbeing, can achieve dramatic results with minimal discomfort.
