The Difference Between iLASIK And Traditional LASIK

Considering laser eye surgery? Congratulations! It’s exciting to be one step closer to being able to see without the help of glasses or contact lenses. At Goel Vision, we offer several different refractive surgery procedures to improve and perfect your vision. iLASIK uses cutting-edge technology that makes fantastic use of the latest laser treatment technology.

What Is LASIK surgery?

LASIK surgery is a fast, safe procedure that uses a laser to reshape the patient’s cornea. A misshapen cornea is the cause of nearsightedness and farsightedness in many people. LASIK can also be used as a treatment to reshape the cornea in cases of mild astigmatism.

Over recent years and with the help of new technology, LASIK surgery has become more comfortable than ever. The healing time is fast, and many people report that they can see clearly as soon as the day after their LASIK procedure. As with any surgery, it’s important to talk with your surgeon to learn whether you’re a good candidate for LASIK surgery. People who are a good fit for laser vision correction are over the age of 18 years old and usually need contacts or glasses. Your eyes need to be fully matured before you have laser vision correction, as this lowers the chance that your prescription will change over time, necessitating another eye surgery treatment to correct your vision. You need to have a corrective vision prescription that’s within certain parameters, as LASIK is not a good fit for people who wear glasses or contacts with very strong prescriptions. Certain overall health and/ or eye health conditions may also make you ineligible for the surgery.

Most people are a great fit for iLASIK surgery, and, likely, you are too. When you come in for your consultation with Dr. Goel, we’ll go over all of the qualifications for the procedure. We’ll also examine your eyes so that we can design the perfect laser eye surgery for you. For many people, that means iLASIK.

iLASIK is an extremely safe, virtually pain-free procedure that is a great fit for many people who want laser vision correction to reduce their need for contacts or glasses. iLASIK uses a wavescan wavefront laser to create a map of the patient’s eye, which shows the surgeon any abnormalities on the patient’s cornea. Having this 3D map makes it easy for your surgeon to see exactly what needs to be corrected during the surgery. A femtosecond laser is a technology used to reshape the cornea, leaving you with clear, improved vision after your eyes heal.

How iLASIK and Traditional LASIK Differ

Both traditional LASIK and iLASIK procedures will help you to see more clearly, but iLASIK is regarded as the gold standard of laser eye procedures by eye surgeons. With iLASIK, your surgeon will create a very small incision into your eye, allowing access to the cornea. Next, a laser is used to reshape the surface of the cornea, safely and quickly improving your vision.

You’ll need to follow your aftercare plan to ensure that your eyes are healing correctly. We ask all patients to come in for an aftercare appointment within 24 hours of your LASIK procedure. At this appointment, we’ll check that the incision in the patient’s eye is healing properly, and also test and discuss how your vision is changing. If you have any questions or concerns about your healing, they’ll be addressed at this appointment.

Your LASIK Procedure: What To Expect

It’s normal to be nervous when you’re having eye surgery. Don’t forget – LASIK is one of the safest, most commonly performed eye surgery procedures in the United States. At Goel Vision, Dr. Sonny Goel has performed over 100,000 eye surgeries over the past 25 years, helping people in our area see clearly without corrective lenses.

At your pre-operative appointment, we’ll talk about anything you need to do differently from your daily routine to prepare for your LASIK procedure. This may mean not taking certain supplements or medications that you normally take, or not wearing your contact lenses. If you’re feeling especially nervous about your laser vision surgery, talk with your eye care team about medications that can help to alleviate your anxiety.

When you come in for your appointment, we ask that you don’t wear any makeup, and make sure that your face is completely clean. Before your procedure begins, your eyes will be numbed with numbing drops. After our wavescan wavefront laser takes measurements of your eyes, we’ll make a small incision in your eye, allowing us to access the cornea. You may feel some pressure, but you will not feel pain. From there, our laser will reshape the cornea. After your procedure, you’ll have a brief exam, and then the support person you brought with you to your procedure will drive you home. LASIK is simple, fast, and is typically done in less than 15 minutes per eye.
