Among the important steps that patients can take during recovery to prevent infection are the following:
- Wear protective eyewear during the first several hours of recovery and while sleeping for the first week of recovery, in order to avoid any accidental damage to the eyes
- Use prescribed antibacterial eye drops as directed to keep the eyes free of bacteria and lubricating eye drops as directed to keep the eyes moist
- Although the eyes may feel dry or itchy, avoid rubbing or scratching the eyes for at least a week after surgery
- Avoid especially dusty or smoky environments
- Refrain from the use of eye makeup and other cosmetic facial products for the first week of recovery
- Stay out of swimming pools, Jacuzzis, or saunas for at least two weeks after surgery
All these steps will protect the corneal flap so that it can heal properly, while also reducing the chances that bacteria or other foreign objects will enter the eye and lead to infection.
