Reducing the Risk of Infection

Patients who live with visual impairments such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism often tire of the daily responsibilities and hassles of caring for corrective eyewear. LASIK surgery eliminates corneal irregularities to correct vision, reducing, and in many cases eliminating, the need for contact lenses or glasses. Over the years, LASIK technology has continued to advance, making LASIK one of the safest and most effective forms of laser vision correction. The primary risk of LASIK surgery is the development of infection after the procedure. While the risk of infection after LASIK is already small, Dr. Goel offers information to help ensure that, for his Boston patients, the risk of LASIK infections is even smaller.

Choosing a LASIK Surgeon

One of the most important steps a patient can make toward minimizing the risk of infection or other complications following LASIK surgery is to choose the best possible LASIK surgeon. Dr. Goel is one of the most educated, experienced, and caring laser eye surgeons. With over 70,000 LASIK procedures performed, patients can rest assured that Dr. Goel has the talent and experience to ensure the success of their LASIK procedure. To make certain that his patients receive care of the highest quality, Dr. Goel offers the most advanced LASIK techniques. Bladeless eye surgery is routinely performed by Dr. Goel. This technique uses a high-powered laser, rather than a traditional blade, to form the corneal flap during surgery. This technique offers greater control and precision and further reduces the already minimal risk of infection or other complications following LASIK.

Post-surgical Care

Post-surgical care is another important factor in reducing the risk of LASIK infection. Before surgery, Dr. Goel discusses with patients how the eyes should be cared for following the LASIK procedure. Thorough post-care instructions will be provided so that every patient is prepared and understands how to best care for the eyes during healing in order to avoid infection. Among the important steps that patients can take during recovery to prevent infection are the following:

  • Wear protective eyewear during the first several hours of recovery and while sleeping for the first week of recovery, in order to avoid any accidental damage to the eyes
  • Use prescribed antibacterial eye drops as directed to keep the eyes free of bacteria and lubricating eye drops as directed to keep the eyes moist
  • Although the eyes may feel dry or itchy, avoid rubbing or scratching the eyes for at least a week after surgery
  • Avoid especially dusty or smoky environments
  • Refrain from the use of eye makeup and other cosmetic facial products for the first week of recovery
  • Stay out of swimming pools, Jacuzzis, or saunas for at least two weeks after surgery

All these steps will protect the corneal flap so that it can heal properly, while also reducing the chances that bacteria or other foreign objects will enter the eye and lead to infection.
